I know Borderhouse has been linked here before, and with good reason since they're awesome. So here they are again, with their 2011 game awards.
We spend a lot of time at The Border House discussing problematic advertising, quests, themes, character depictions and representations within games. It is wonderful when we can laud the things that games do well. Several authors have gotten together and picked some of our favorite games from 2011. These are games that did specific things well. The fact that they exist on this list does not mean that they are free from any criticism but that they have positive aspects we want to recognize and applaud. With that disclosure, let’s grant some praise for the gaming industry!

Dragon Age 2 placed in quite a few categories... well, to be specific, Dragon Age 2 placed in almost every category.

Check it out, it's worth a look, even if only to enjoy a list that goes beyond "best RPG," "best MMO," etc.

This article is a month old, but I just found it and had to share, since it so perfectly sums up my feelings on both Bethesda and Bioware games. If they would merge to form a megatron-like super developer, with the Bethesda half working on environments and settings, and Bioware doing characters, I would likely never leave my computer again.

(oh, and happy 2012 everybody!)

I posted this on tumblr earlier, but I figured I'd put it here too.  It's sort of Dragon Age related anyway!

*****

So the other night, well early morning if anybody’s really counting, but anyway…

Yeah, so the other  EARLY MORNING I had a dream.  It was a really weird and short dream.  I get those a lot right before I wake up.

Anyway, in this dream, my husband and I were in bed sleeping (if THAT’S not the lamest start to a dream I’ll eat my hoodie), and anyway, I hear a noise downstairs.  At first I think nothing of it, but it gets louder.  I am now convinced there is someone in the house, even though my dog is not barking.  If you knew my dog, you’d understand why this would worry me, lol.

So I wake Justin up, and he hears the noise too, verifying that I’m not insane.  So instead of doing anything, we sit there talking in hushed tones about it.  Why?  I have no idea.  Suddenly, two people sitting at the foot of the bed start chiming into the conversation.  I look down and see Fenris and Anders of all people.  This doesn’t seem to disturb either me or my husband, however, so we continue talking strategy with them as if they’re always there.  It’s about this time when I start thinking to myself ‘now WAIT a second… we have a rifle in the closet, an elf that can literally phase his hand through a person’s chest, and a mage who can set them on fire… why the FUCK are we sitting here like cowards?’  Then the logical part of my head chimes in with ‘furthermore… why are Anders and Fenris in your room and WHY aren’t they naked?’

That’s when I realize that I’m lucid dreaming.  And that I have to pee.  So I give a cheerful ‘well have fun with that, I’m out!’ and wake up.  The end.  This is the weird shit that goes through my head sometimes.  Now you see where my insanity comes from.  THE MORE YOU KNOW.

****

So, has anything ridiculous happened to anybody else here?  Or am I just that batty?  XD  Share share share!

Alright, so...I finally got a new graphics card and power supply, and my computer is now able to actually run games (hooray!). Got my shiny new copy of DA:O Ultimate Edition in the mail today, so I'm ready to start doing the whole "mods" thing!

Right?

Right?

Um, no, not quite. You see, I found dragonagenexus. Found a couple mods that look fun (dialog fix, zevasap, etc)--but I have no idea how to actually add mods to my game.

So, is there some kind of tutorial out there for people like me who know almost nothing (okay, absolutely nothing) about technical computer stuff? Is this something that's going to be way over my head, and I should just quit now before I tear my hair out? Or is it really simple and I'm just missing something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone know how to say 'kinslayer' in Dalish? I know that it should include elvhen, which refers to the elven people, but I haven't been able to get further than that.

Link here

"One of the most oft-repeated criticisms of the game was its reuse of environments, and one of the first points on the official site is that players will be leaving the all-too-familiar city of Kirkwall for entirely new sites and locales. The setting this time around includes an "ancient Grey Warden prison" that the player and party must investigate after coming under attack by a criminal group hunting protagonist Hawke's bloodline.

Legacy focuses on Hawke's father (who was not in the original game) - and the way that the BioWare site mentions the "harsh truth about the Hawke lineage," it's a safe bet that Hawke won't like what s/he finds in the prison."

I just have to share this because it rocks! I somehow zeroed out my latest chapter and I've got like 6000 words done. This chapter hasn't been an easy one either...

I keep my stories in my Dropbox folder. I knew I could restore it if it was deleted... but I didn't know that Dropbox also keeps versions!  Horray! I was able to get my story back before it was zeroed out.

*celebrates!*

Just had to share that because Dropbox really rocks!

I'm a TVtropes addict.

If there are any not in the know, TVtropes is an open-source wiki that collects on various writing and design conventions and devices (tropes) found within creative works. Pages exist for thousands of different tropes and franchises (including this one.) Many of the pages included on the wiki incorporate a sort of character biography thread where various tropes are collected and cataloged in order to best describe the characters therein.

Since we are all writers or artists or roleplayers or at least some sort of combination thereof, I thought that it might be an interesting exercise to create our own TVtropes-styled character biographies for our various Hawkes, Wardens and other OCs in order to both identify which tropes we associate with our own characters, as well as to use the vast amount of information available on the wiki to potentially gain new insight to our characters. It's also an opportunity for other community members who may be familiar with our various OCs to suggest certain tropes that we may not have previously attributed to our characters.

Feel free to post your bios, and have fun!

Hi all!

I'm in the middle of Chapter 8 of my DAO fic , and I'm stuck at a couple of dialogue spots. My Amell is going back to Haven and will be speaking to both the Haven Guard and Kolgrim, but while I can remember the general gist of how those conversations went, I do not recall the specifics. At the time that the Mage PC around whom I've based this fic went back to Haven, I had no idea I was going to be writing a fic, so I neglected to record her conversations with either of these guys or save a game near that spot so I could go back and replay the conversations. Also, since I play on the PS3, I have no access to the toolset and cannot find the dialogue trees myself from raw data files (and I've tried a Google search as well --no dice). So I'm posting a plea for help from my PC-playing People of Thedas brethren and sistren. What I need are the in-game dialogue trees between the PC and the Haven Guard, and then the PC and Kolgrim, for the *second* visit to Haven (meaning, post-Sacred Ashes quest) --assuming that the PC has previously defiled the Ashes. Kolgrim's dialogue tree should also include an offer from the PC to join his/her fight against the Darkspawn, at which point Kolgrim says something to the effect of "Ha! Never. Instead we shall stay up here and watch you all die, and then Andraste will come down and take her place as the ruler of all Ferelden! Muhahahaha!" I need that dialogue too.

Please please please and thank you to anyone who can help me with this. I may end up editing the dialogue a bit as I did with some of the other in-game convos I've used, but I always like to at least start with the original. I will be sure to give you credit when the chapter is posted! :)

Without a proper toolset the DA2 mod scene is still a bit sparse. A few things have come out that might be worth your attention, though.

One, in particular, inspired my happy dance. There has been one thing I've been howling over in DA2 for ages.
Teeth.

Yeah, they fixed the "hi, I live off unfiltered luckys, coffee, and healthy quantities of brown dye taken orally" issue from DAO...
and replaced it with BLOOD SPLATTERED TEETH.
I don't know about you, but every time I talked to someone with blood on them (basically almost always since you can't go five feet without some gang ambushing you) it looked like they had teeth knocked out.
Not pretty.

I know it can't be just me. I mean, seriously... I've got a decent sized LED monitor. I play with setting on high. I've got direct x 11 enabled. If that looks like missing teeth for me, it must for almost everyone.

And finally... someone made this mod. And I love them for it so very, very much.
No More Blood Splattered Teeth

Other mods of note...

A not too bad Zevran that is a little closer to the DAO look. They also did a Teagan and Alistair set that's worth a gander.

Get rid of the crumb-catcher with Armors De-Shelved

Once that's done, you can put the armor on anyone else. Equip your party lets you play dress up once more. It is not without its flaws, as you lose access to their custom armors.

What about all of you? Seen anything good lately?

So...if a ruling monarch has a regent to run things in his/her absence, what do you suppose an arl/essa would have? I'm having difficulty filtering through the multitude of information pertaining to this subject in the middle ages and am looking for ideas, suggestions or downright knowledge! Thanks for reading, Biff

Okay, so I could have sworn that someone posted a link not too long ago to a website that calculated distances to and from various places in Thedas, but I can't for the life of me find it now.

Anyone happen to know it by chance? I'm trying to figure out exactly how long it would take to get from Vigil's Keep to Amaranthine (as well as various other places in Awakening).

I'm not dead! Expect a bit of maintenance happening behind the scenes, as well as a post I've been meaning to get live for a while coming soon.

For the record, we're no longer considering DLC spoilerrific, especially now that we're in the dry spell between DLCs and the new DA game.

Thanks darlings!
