The Anderfels was an Imperium province. So too was Antiva (well, it would only stand to reason, since Arlathan was in northern Antiva, and the city was obliterated by the Imperium for all intents and purposes), and also, the Free Marches would have been held by the Imperium. They held Kirkwall, which is part of the Free Marches, so on, so forth.

Now, Ferelden, which was a BFE Imperium province, has roads everywhere.

Antiva, Rivain, most of the Free Marches...nada. What the heck? And the Anderfels - which was also spitting distance from the main area of Tevinter proper has no roads.

So, there's no Imperial Highway in Rivain, Antiva, the Anderfels, and over half of the Free Marches. Logic? Thoughts?

...Methinks this map was planned poorly.

Does everyone just...fly where they want to go? Or take eluvians? Or maybe they just...oh, I don't know, appear wherever they want to go? Nations and city states that survive off of trade (Antiva, the Free Marches, Rivain) would require roads, don't you think? So, why does the Thedas map have NO ROADS for these places?

The only remotely plausible reason I can come up with is that the Thedas map we have was one drawn by Ferelden cartographers, covering areas that they found important with the most accuracy.

One problem with that is this:

Why would they have Tevinter and Nevarra mapped out so well? And also, since the Free Marches are so close, wouldn't you think that they would be the most traded with? So, that would mean that mapping those roads would be important. And as to why Orlais would be well mapped for a Ferelden Thedas map, would be because of the Occupation, etc.

And even I find those reasons to be rather thin.

Draconic intelligence? I fought "Andraste" yet again last night and found myself wondering about why she would care anything about the Urn. So, her blood would form a connection to the magical power of the Urn? That seems to be what's implied. Anyway, how would she know such a thing? And is that the only reason for creating her cult? And if you're a dragon, how would you convince someone that it's a good idea to drink your blood? And if the Urn weren't involved, why would you do such a thing to begin with?

This is one of those little things I keep coming back to, so I thought I'd see what the bright minds here might have to say. All theories are welcomed with open arms!

Oh, and thanks to everyone who shared her/his thoughts on DAII. I ordered my copy yesterday. Yay, Amazon!

No, not too soon.  The last couple days have had some interesting news for the franchise.

Bioware has announced that they are cancelling further DLC and a planned expansion for DA2, and moving right on to DA3.  (edit to add, they have also said there won't be a DA2 collectors/legacy edition that includes the DLC, so if you were holding out for that....might as well pick it up next time you see a good deal).

DA3 will, apparently, be neither Warden nor Hawke related.  And will draw from Skyrim. (Whatever that means...)

There are also hints it won't import previous games.
Let the speculation begin!

Aaand I continue spamming y'all with lore questions!

So. From time to time, against my best judgment, I go to the BSN boards to read one of the never-ending mages vs templars threads (and it seems that practically any thread that mentions anything even tangentially related to magic & mage characters turns into one). And there is one question that always comes up and that I’ve never seen to be argued with actual examples from the games.

The pro-templar posters say that the problem with mages is that they can get possessed by a demon and turn abomination at any point in time. Just – boom, insta-evil. This is also part of David Gaider’s explanation of the templar POV, with his “kitten that can randomly explode destroying a city block” comparison.

This is the part where I stare at the screen hastily searching my memories of the games, and coming up with... next to nothing that supports these descriptions.

Am I missing some crucial mage-turns-into-abomination scenes? )

Does anyone know how to say 'kinslayer' in Dalish? I know that it should include elvhen, which refers to the elven people, but I haven't been able to get further than that.

My version of the so called "Bride of the Maker". I personally don't believe any of it - I think the theory that she might have been a mage is a lot more plausible. What do you think?

Hiya all, I have a question for you.

Does anyone know whether Garahel, Hero of the Fourth Blight was Dalish or Alienage bred?  The lore establishes that he's an elf, but I haven't seen anything beyond that.

You know who else likes fireballs? ANDERS. Hmmm....This is the first in what will hopefully be an ongoing series of group discussion posts focused on major aspects of the Dragon Age lore.

So... let's talk.
Let's talk about the Chantry

No, not that specific Chantry, mind you. I mean the institution. The belief system. The enormous, glaring, inconsistencies.

A few things are certain. We know a woman named Andraste, born in Denerim, was married to a man named Maferath. We know she was an escaped slave, and led an uprising against the Imperium. A successful uprising, perhaps because she was the "spiritual bride" of the Maker... or perhaps because the Tevinter Imperium was still in shambles from the first blight.

Her husband betrayed her and she was burnt alive.

But beyond that.... It seems like mythology shuffle.

Seriously, I went to Catholic school and even I'm confused now... )

I've typed out the Malcolm-related codex entries for the new DLC. Figure the DA2 writers among us might be able to use the backstory.

(my DA2 "how they met" fic? Totally, completely shelved in light of this.)

Four below cut. DA2 spoilers? )

Grey Wardens are essentially just badass lemmings.

So [personal profile] lenna_nightrunner  and I need some Riordan background for VLS'v, but neither of us have read or own the books, which I understand his backstory is in? (Wow, that sentence is a nightmare.) I have a basic story for him in my head, but I don't know what's canon and what's been assimilated from AU fic, so I was wondering if anyone knew for sure some answers to the following questions:

1) How did he join?
2) Any love life stuff happen?

Thank you, darlings.

So he's not in the books. We get to make it up as we go then, right? Right? Eeee.

Rather than freak out about being ninja rivalmanced by Merrill, I'm going to ask a question!

NPCs keep calling my f!Hawke "serah" Hawke. This confuses me, because Ser still seems to be in use for female knights, and the closest equivalent I can come up with is "sirrah," which was contemptuous.

So what is the actual meaning and usage of "serah?"

(Also mods I totally mis-tagged, can you please pull those off? I apologize for my fail.)

I have vague memories of someone saying that the toolset not only confirms that Soris and Shianni are siblings and your first cousins, but also gives the rather awful story about their mother dying in a riot. Am I just pulling this from my fevered brain, or is it actually canon?

OCD Much?

...I've created a flippin' language for the horseclans of flippin' Antiva. Yes. I am obsessive compulsive.
Zamas Ga'hals The list at the moment, is incomplete. I would say "Someone shoot me" but that'd be bad. I would like to finish stuff long before that would happen.

Hey, since I'm building my Antiva wiki's and due to some conversations I've had with [personal profile] bellaknoti it seems I'm going to be making a video blog of Sula's recipes.

My plans for recipes are as follows:

Chicken "Antivan" style
Arroz con pollo
Tikka masala
Baba ganoush
Ajo blanco

At the moment, I don't have a working oven, so I can't do anything baked. But if it's something I can 'bake' via the stove top, I'd be happy to do so. So, any thoughts, requests, random questions about spice mixes, and whatnot, please, go ahead and reply. I'm taking requests on this stuff. I could make pasta from scratch also, but my kitchen is also very tiny, so that one would be hard to do.

According to the Wiki, elven slavery is still legal in the Imperium. It's technically illegal in Orlais, but that's often ignored.

Zevran says "I was sold on the slave market as a boy." I'm interpreting this to mean that as in Orlais, slavery is technically illegal in Antiva. However, since it makes money, a black market exists, and since the law in Antiva is non-existent, no one tries to hide it much.

Any thoughts?

What language is spoken by human's in Ferelden? I seem to recall a dwarf calling it the "King's tongue" is that how they refer to it?

So... the weird thing is, if you inherit your same-gender parent's caste, wouldn't these castes end up almost entirely of the same gender? I guess the exception would be if castes intermarry mostly within the same caste it would be all right. But if you had smiths always marrying warriors, it'd be a problem eventually.

I'm not a mathematical whiz but I could imagine you could analyze how soon a 51% female smith caste would become all female by plugging in some numbers for how often they marry out of caste versus within caste and making up some numbers about female/male birth rates and so on.

Anyway, just something fun to think about. :)

[personal profile] bellaknoti has been tireless in her deconstruction and updating of DragonAgeWiki's elvish. Some of it is only conjecture, but it is all broken down logically. There are insults and affectionate terms listed, which are invaluable to anyone writing anything with the Dalish. In A Murder of Crows I've been using heavy references to her material to give the story that extra 'oomph' of realism.
Since she's not one to toot her own horn, I'm doing it for her. Not only that, but like I said - I've been finding the resource invaluable. I think someone should take on dwarvish and Qun'ari the same way she has. Also, anyone playing DA2 when they get it - if they could please send any new elvish phrases to her, that would be lovely I'm sure. It would also probably make her melt into a puddle of goo.

How old is Loghain at the beginning of Origins? How old was Maric when he disappeared? (I know DG has confirmed that he's dead, but for fic-writing purposes, as far as I'm concerned he's only comic-book dead.)

The inconsistency of dating between novels and game makes my poor little non-mathematically-inclined brain hurt.

Dragonmod here!

I'm not dead! Expect a bit of maintenance happening behind the scenes, as well as a post I've been meaning to get live for a while coming soon.

For the record, we're no longer considering DLC spoilerrific, especially now that we're in the dry spell between DLCs and the new DA game.

Thanks darlings!
