Hmmm... so what seems more likely?  "Shit, shit, shit, those were surprise announcements?!  Quick, pull it down!" or "Wheee! invented game titles out of thin air and tossed them on the schedule for shits and giggles."

Since that is a pretty impressive series of typos if that wasn't what they meant.

I can't even fathom the leadup to them being put on the schedule if it wasn't already named...

You have been paired!

Check your Inbox!

By now everyone should have received a message from me via Dreamwidth with your partner's info and a link to their original response. We ended up with an even number of people (yay!) and everyone seemed to match pretty nicely (double yay!).

Feel free to chat with your partner about your plans for your work. Don't tell everyone else who you are paired with, though. Since everything is posted anonymously to[personal profile] thedas_ficarchive it's best to keep it hush-hush until then.

Submissions are due by Sunday, February 12. . Then we’ll get everything formatted properly and post it on[personal profile] thedas_ficarchive on Tuesday, February 14! At that point we’ll announce the timeline for voting.

How do I submit my totally amazing fanwork when it’s done?

Last weekend I went to Thedas UK and, as well as having more fun than I ever thought possible at a convention I ended up taking a good few photos and a video (or four...). Unfortunately, I didn't have the foresight to take photos during the webchat, but I did take some group shots, a few impromptu pics and tried to fit an entire banquet table in one shot, with somewhat limited success. I hope you guys like them!

Photos and video under the cut. )

You may have noticed something unusual across the web today. If you haven't been following the news, sites everywhere are going "black" to promote awareness of, and encourage opposition to, SOPA.

While this impacts the US members of POT very directly, if it passes it will impact us all in the long run. That fanfic we write? The fan art we draw? All could be considered illegal under SOPA, or the House version, PIPA.

AO3 is based in the US, ffnet is based in the US, dreamwidth is based in the US, deviantart is based in the US. Each and every one of these sites could be shut down completely, or restricted dramatically, by this bill. Because it directly impacts, and all but eliminates, the "fair use" clause, fandom sites would lose the one major legal protection they have under the first amendment.  In all likelihood, should this bill pass, many of these sites would receive takedown notices within days- or worse.

The English version of Wikipedia has a handy form up right now on their main page. Punch in your zip code and it'll give you the contact info for your representatives and senators. I strongly encourage our US members to take a moment today and shoot them a quick email. They also have a lot more info up on the bills, what they would do exactly, and how it would impact people both within and outside the US.

Good Times

Thedas UK was the best fun I've had in months.

Possibly in years.

You should all have come, but we won't punish you for not doing so - if the lovely organisers can get their tech in order, I *think* they'll have a massive treat for all of you soon.

And yes, I'm a tease.

Greetings, Thedans!

Valentine’s Day is coming up, which means it’s time for our second annual Sugar & Spice fanwork swap event! We’d all like to thank everyone who participated last year—It was a huge success and a blast to be a part of. We’d love for you to join in again, and invite everyone who wasn’t around last year to participate. The more of us are involved, the better the event will be!

Here’s the deal, Q&A style:

What’s this whole thing all about anyway?
Sugar & Spice is a fanwork swap. That means that everyone who participates will either write a one-shot piece of fanfiction or create a piece of artwork for another community member, and will receive one in return.

But that sounds like a Secret Santa, and we just did one of those! How is this different?
Unlike a Secret Santa event, participants are paired up based on compatible interests (determined using the form below). This helps make sure that everyone gets to create something they want to create and receive something they want to receive. And there’s a voting component! Once everyone’s submissions have been posted and we all get a chance to read them, we’ll vote for our favorites in different categories and declare winners at the end of the event. Also, the fanworks are split into two categories: Sugar and Spice.

Wait, “Sugar” and “Spice”?
The two categories, Sugar and Spice, refer to fanwork ratings. Sugar is anything rated PG-13 or lower. There should be no nudity or sexual images (or copious amounts of gore) in a sugar piece. Spice is R and above. It can include explicit sex and/or violence. This system helps us accommodate everyone’s tastes.

So what’s up with this whole voting thing? How does it work? What do you win?
Everyone, including those who weren’t able to participate, will be able to vote for their favorite fanworks. Categories include the following: Best Sugar (first, second, and third place), Best Spice (first, second, and third place), and a few unannounced categories the mods may come up with later. As an example, last year’s mod categories were Most Unexpected Pairing and Best Last Line, but they may be different this year! Our Fearless Leader [personal profile] twist_shimmy has volunteered to create icons or banners of the winners’ choosing as prizes, and there may be others. Plus winning is GLORIOUS :D

What’s the timeline, huh?
Signups open right now, and close on Wednesday, January 18. You will receive the name of your fanwork recipient and the info they gave us by Sunday, January 22 at the latest. Submissions are due by Sunday, February 12. That means you’ll have a minimum of three weeks to complete and submit your fanwork. Then we’ll get everything formatted properly and post it on [personal profile] thedas_ficarchive on Tuesday, February 14! At that point we’ll announce the timeline for voting. Psyched yet?

How do I submit my totally amazing fanwork when it’s done?
E-mail your completed fic or art to lennanightrunner[at]gmail[dot]com. Please submit it as a .doc, .docx, .odt, or .txt file if it’s a fic or a .jpg or .gif if it’s an image (Talk to us if that’s a problem for some reason).

That sounds awesome, Lenna! How do I sign up?
To participate, please fill out the following form and post it as a comment here. I’ll post a comment with my information as an example.

I want to [write/draw].
I like [DAO/DA2/both games].
I want to create [sugar/spice/either].
I want to receive [sugar/spice/either].
I want to create [het/slash/femmeslash/any].
I want to receive [het/slash/femmeslash/any].
Three characters I like to write/draw are ____, ____, and _____.
Three characters I don’t like to write/draw are ____, ____, and _____.
Three characters I’d like in a fic/pic are ____, ____, and _____.
Three characters I wouldn’t like in a fic/pic are ____, ____, and _____.
Comments/Other info? ____.

**PLEASE NOTE** When listing your characters, keep in mind that:
1) PCs count as characters, so you can specify, e.g. m!Mahariel, f!Surana, m!Hawke, etc. OR you can just put Mahariel, Surana, or Hawke if it's not a gender issue. This information will give you an opportunity to a) include or exclude certain origins, b) indicate whether you'd like PCs to be involved or not. However, please do not list a specific PC (e.g. Caerwyn) as a character.
2) Avoid obscure characters. You might be a huge Alfstanna fan or think a fic about Mouse would be awesome, but keep in mind that the lesser known a character is, the harder it will be for us to find someone to write that character.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or [personal profile] amhran_comhrac. We’re very excited to be holding this swap again, and we hope you’ll join us!

Much love!

P.S. If you want to know more or get a head start, check out last year’s submissions at [personal profile] thedas_ficarchive

Ooookay. So Christmas/New Year is rapidly approaching, and we could do with presents, right? So, I'm going to arrange a secret santa for the community. If you want to contribute fic or art to a secret santa pool, register your name below, together with a character/pairing you would like to receive fic or art of.

This will be a proper secret santa. In that, I'll put EVERYONE's name in a hat, then pull them out one by one. It won't be a fic or art swap, the person who gets you will not be the person who you get, unless there is a coincidence, which does, admittedly, sometimes happen. It will be as random as I can make it :D. I will make one condition - if for whatever reason you don't want to write or draw the pairing or character your secret santa has asked for, I will act as a mediator and negotiate something different between the two of you. I will do this without informing you or your partner who the other party is so we can maintain the surprise.

Naturally if there is a problem I'll need to know as soon as possible in order to get as much time in there for people to do their thing before New Year.

If you need to pull out at any time also, please let me know and I'll attempt to arrange a substitution. If you're just going to be a little bit late you can tell me also, most of us are pretty easy going and won't mind if we get our presents POST Christmas :D.

Sample comment from me below, if anyone would like to know exactly how I would like you to set them out! I'm not going to screen comments - I will inform you by message who your secret santa receiver is, and this is just the sign up!

"One of the most oft-repeated criticisms of the game was its reuse of environments, and one of the first points on the official site is that players will be leaving the all-too-familiar city of Kirkwall for entirely new sites and locales. The setting this time around includes an "ancient Grey Warden prison" that the player and party must investigate after coming under attack by a criminal group hunting protagonist Hawke's bloodline.

Legacy focuses on Hawke's father (who was not in the original game) - and the way that the BioWare site mentions the "harsh truth about the Hawke lineage," it's a safe bet that Hawke won't like what s/he finds in the prison."

 Press release

Here's the official summary:

"A mystical killer stalks the halls of the White Spire, the heart of templar power in the mighty Orlesian Empire. To prove his innocence, Adrian reluctantly embarks on a journey into the western wastelands that will not only reveal much more than he bargained for but change the fate of his fellow mages forever."

Stupid templars. As you might have gathered, you're probably best off reading the first two books before this one comes out in fall. Learn more about it at

Sorry, I may have overcooked it a bit.
I meant to post about this a couple days ago but forgot.

One Month Left!

That's right, everyone... start prepping your manifestos. We decided three months would be a decent chunk o' time for the spoiler lockdown, which means the floodgates open on June 8.

If you've been putting off that last love interest playthrough, well, there's your inspiration.

In the meantime keep using cuts and tags (and everyone has been awesome about that so far). I just wanted to give everybody a good chunk of advance warning.

And speaking of cuts and tags... don't forget the NSFW/AO checkbox when you're posting that extra spicy Sister Petrice/The Mother/Ser Jory hurt/comfort[1] yarn. We've got a lot of new members, and most haven't had time to learn who the smutpeddlers among us are. (hint: I'm one of them)

...and I almost forgot.  There's a new box on the sidebar, titled "Right Now" (as in "right now I'd love it if someone would give me a better title for that thing since that's really a bit too pta newsletter for my tastes") where you will always find any ongoing community prompts, winners of the recent prompt contest, current news... and maybe eventually a few other things we've got cooking up.

[1]the result of me trying to think of the most unappealing DA smut ever to be conceived. Please, don't take it as a challenge! Please

Since there seems to be some confusion about creating new tags for fic I thought we should post something clearing it up. The character and series tags are specifically to help make searching for posts on this community quick and easy. All the goofy fun silly tags are in the community section, the character/series/discussion ones are the SRS BSNS tags for people who want to find something.

So we only have character tags for cannon characters (since any OC would be just as easily found under fic series title), and series tags for fic that is actually posted here on People of Thedas. It doesn’t have to be exclusive to the community... but it does have to actually appear here- not simply a link sending people offsite. Since, well… we want you to stay here. And talk here. And not follow a link somewhere to talk there. We’re greedy like that. Because we love you. And want you ALL TO OURSELVES. RIGHT HERE. FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES. (Drowning in rivers of blood is, of course, recommended but optional).
That being said, if you need a tag, here's another one of our semi-regular tag-request threads.  Or, as always, you can contact any of the mods (the full list is in the comm profile).

UPDATE: Since it was asked, I figured others might be wondering as well.  If you've got an established fic or comic and you want to begin posting it here... go right ahead!  Link to your first chapter and just put up the new ones, no reason to go back and fuss with backdating posts and all that (and seriously, no one wants me to upload the 70 chapters of AOA that already existed before People of Thedas. That much Maggie just isn't healthy for anyone.)

Was over at Nexus and saw this news item.  Went to the DA2 site, got instructions and got my free PC download of ME2.  I have never played the game so I'm pretty jazzed about the free game myself, but I understand a lot of DA fans already own ME2, so it may not be hugely beneficial to all.  Either way, a free game is a free game and I thought I would share.

I had no issues reusing my DA2 online pass to get my ME2 code, but others mentioned early on they did.  I think whatever was wrong is fixed now.

Oh look, Loghain snapped. THIS IS YOUR FAULT, EA.

I was browsing the Nexus to re-download my favorite Velanna morph (she looks SO much better with short hair) when I stumbled across this:

"Gamingbolt reports that EA has banned a player from accessing his Bioware social account needed to activate Dragon Age 2 for a negative comment posted on the Bioware forums.

In what appears to be a totaly unfair practice, it appears EA are banning people from accessing their legally purchased copies of Dragon Age 2 if they were vocal about their displeasure regarding the game over at the official Bioware forums.

One particular case in point is of VWARE, a user who got banned for accusing Bioware of “selling their souls to the EA devil”. He agreed that it was fair to ban him from the forums for 72 hours, however was shocked when he realized that he can’t access his Bioware social account and activate his recently purchased copy of Dragon Age 2.
A Bioware moderator responded to the poster's complaint on the Bioware forums.

Please review the EA Community Terms of Service, particularly sections #9 and #11. There are two levels of enforcement here:

1. BioWare community bans are forum-only and can be for as little as 24 hours. These bans should have no effect on your game, only your ability to use all the features of this website/community. these bans are handed out by BioWare Moderators as the result of our travels around the forum and/or issues reported by fellow community members.

2. EA Community bans come down from a different department and are the result of someone hitting the REPORT POST button. These bans can affect access to your game and/or DLC.

Consider it an added incentive to follow the rules you say you're going to follow.

The case raises questions about the legality of preventing people from using a legally purchased product.

By preventing a game owner from playing their game EA may be violating the implied warranty of merchantability. Under international sales law a seller must provide goods fit for their ordinary purpose. By preventing the user from playing their game EA is violating the ordinary expectations that a buyer would be able to play their game.

It should be noted that VWare's case is not the only one to have been reported on the Bioware forums."

I've heard about the inhumane conditions EA puts their game designers through (dating one, how can I not; he comes home from work late and says "at least I don't work for EA!"), but can they seriously expect to deprive people of playing legally purchased content?

What do you guys think? I don't frequent the BSN, so I'm sure there's more to the story.

First order of business:

Okay, kidlings, we're gonna go ahead and set you all free to post Dragon Age 2-related things now that the sticky has nearly 400 comments. Please follow the rules below:
  • Use the spoilers: dragon age 2 tag if needed.
  • Cut. When in doubt, cut. Not sure if it's a spoiler? Cut.
  • Did I mention cut? I'm mostly emphasizing this to be a brat-- you guys are awesome at this and it's going to be amazing.
  • Keep DA2 screenshots under a cut for just a bit longer. (Yes, even you, [personal profile] twist_shimmy .)
  • Fic and fanart is allowed. As are icons, gameplay questions, whatever. It's all fair game now.

Second order of business:

If you're interested in going on the list of people who will be asked to submit a low-key prompt to the comm, click here and sign up. We need a couple more people to get a full years' worth of such fuckery, and I am nothing if not a completionist.

Third order of business:

Don't forget to sign up for the Easter/Spring Season prompt! The theme is Stages of Life, and it's going to both kick ass and take names. Click the banner to head to the post for details.

Use the comments here for questions on the rules, the Spring Season prompt, or the monthly prompt list. Also, this would be a good place to hit us up for character/series tags that your fanworks have been lacking.

We started our search hoping that two recruits would survive the Joining, and ended up with three! We've woken them up, let them recover from all that green, and handed them toothbrushes with which to purge that delicious taste of archdemon blood from their mouths.

I'm proud to announce our three new moderators: darkrose, amhran_comhrac, and miri1984!

There's an issue with user profile linking and I don't want to talk about it.

We're ecstatic that they answered the call and can't wait to see the ideas they've proposed get put into action. We hope that not only will having them on board allow us to continue giving all of you the attention you deserve, but also bring a diverse group of perspectives and ideas to the leadership here. Trust me when I say that all of them are going to bring about some awesome things for you to look forward to. (No pressure, guys.)

Shimmy and I will of course still be around doing our usual modly things, but we encourage you to come to any/all of our three new mods if you have any questions/concerns/suggestions/objections/compliments/criticisms/whatever at any time. You can rest assured that we'll all be working together to address the things in my aforementioned /-filled list, and contacting more than one of us will probably get you answers sooner.

Please join Shimmy and me in congratulating our new colleagues! We know that appointing them will make our community even more awesome than it already is :D

Thanks darlings!
