I'm gonna go ahead and post this over here, as I'm guessing there's people who hadn't seen it as it was originally on ZevCom. Well actually kmeme first, and then ZevCom. Two warnings about this: 1 - I wrote it in a fit of insomnia 2 - I was writing it in the little LJ reply boxes which have a limited character space.. so while logical at the time, the POV swings back n'forth once it's all put together. I apologize for that... it's not my usual way.

AN: This is from an unfilled prompt on kinkmeme, which um, I suppose is now filled. It was written over the course of two days in a bout of insomnia that was eventually interrupted by passing out for a few hours and then finishing the last scene. Bellaknoti beta'd on the fly - in seven hours. There's some heavy perspective changes in this that I didn't change out because how this was posted/written was for the kinkmeme, and the reply boxes hold about four thousand characters.... so the perspective changes were logical at the time, and to change them now would make things even weirder. And cut out a huge chunk of the story. Not my usual way of doing things - rapid POV changes that is - so please forgives.

Rule 17 Writing Question

Since I'm always curious about other people's creative process and how they write, I thought I'd ask the other fic writers on this community how much editing and trimming do you do to your work? Do you edit and trim at all? Write a first draft and then are finished? How much of your stuff ends up on the figurative cutting room floor? I'm wondering if other writers love to edit and pick at stuff the way I do or if they have an entirely different way of writing.

I know that for me, I'm a huge fan of Strunk & White's Rule 17 (Omit needless words) and that most of the time, I tend to do as much work editing, trimming and cutting my fics as I do on the actual first draft. And I've definitely had stories where my betas (or myself) have chopped huge parts out and trimmed the dialogue, etc... to pick up the pacing and the rhythm of the fic, and always my stories seem better for it.

So tell me your creative process because I'd love to know!

How old is Loghain at the beginning of Origins? How old was Maric when he disappeared? (I know DG has confirmed that he's dead, but for fic-writing purposes, as far as I'm concerned he's only comic-book dead.)

The inconsistency of dating between novels and game makes my poor little non-mathematically-inclined brain hurt.

Summary: He was the one left to pick up the pieces. As usual.
AN: Y'know I think it's kinda sad that often we turn to Zev as the fall back guy. Doesn't anyone see the irony of the supposedly faithless, unreliable, sleezy man-ho as being the one who always does what it takes to make things work? That in the end he's the most reliable? Morrigan leaves ya if you're a male Warden, or have the unlock romance mod. Alistair dies or dumps you, unless he's hardened, ya'll do the ritual, and you're a human noble. Or you can be his bit o'ass on the side. How humiliating. As for Leliana um, no offense, but I didn't care for that romance much. So, Zev winds up as the fall back guy so often. A lot of me thinks he's willing to be that, because any scrap of good in his life is infinitely precious. No matter if he would wish it all to himself, would wish that he wasn't the back up plan. But he takes what he can get, and is grateful. This, makes me sad. And makes me wanna give him a big plate of cookies, and warm milk with honey before snuggling him up with a fuzzy blankie.
And it also made me feel guilty for using him as the rebound guy the one time that I did.

Amku has been kind enough to beta this, she is awesome and is kind enough to point out areas for improvement while actually telling me why they need to be improved. See, that is cool – and yes I sound so young saying that but whatever.

My goodness, I don't think I've ever managed to complete an entire picture from start to finish in one day.  I need to go lay down and soak my wrist!  XD  Inspiration is a slave-driver like that I guess, lol.  Not to mention the bribe of fic/drabble is like... my Achilles's heel.  I AM WEAK!  Oh and twist_shimmy  and lenna_nightrunner  are awesome.  But I'm pretty sure everybody knows that already, so I digress!
