My M!Hawke's New Staff - No Spoilers

I was jazzed to pick up a staff upgrade for my new mage Hawke.  I quickly equipped it; excited to see how cool it would look.  I immediately had a WTF moment trying to figure out what the designers were going for.  I get it...  Hawke is supposed to hide the fact that he's a mage and the axe is cool.  But did they have to add a barber shop sign and the head off an old mop as well? 

Designer 1: "It needs something else, I'm just not sure what..."
Designer 2: "Oh, it totally needs a mop head."
Designer 1: "BRILLIANT!  You know, I went to the barber yesterday and I really like those little red and white cylinder signs they have.  Let's add one of those too!"
Designer 2: "BRILLIANT!"
