For the Varel and/or Nathaniel fans out there...

For all those Varel and Nathaniel fans out there, I am giving mad kudos to CCbug and lisakodysam's collaboration fic, Nobility Has Another Meaning.

Not only does it explore Varel's background and Nathaniel's childhood twenty years before the Fifth Blight, it also delves into the past of Arl Rendon Howe's wife, the arlessa of Amaranthine, who is already portrayed in the first chapter as a strong woman who is not a stereotypical woman warrior, as per the usual you find in a fantasy setting. This is a character we hardly see in the game or in fanfiction, and I think you will all find her very interesting indeed.

It is extremely well written, one of the true gems of FF.net, and sets up excellent tension and shows glimpses of very intriguing premises right there in the first chapter.

There needs to be more Varel fic in general, of course, but I have to say that I'd love some Varel slash....though I'm not entirely sure who I'd slash him with. Pre-game Varel/Duncan, maybe...? *ponders*

I'd never thought of Varel as slash material, being 'older', I kind of had the hots for him myself ;) I wonder what a post-blight Loghain would make of him? Then again, I don't really see Loghain as slash material either. Maybe there's a story there waiting to be written?

Well, I can see it as a possibility for both Varel and Loghain, especially as they are older men and also both soldiers. Presumably they know what they want by now, and what they like. I can totally see them looking for, you know, companionship, especially on the eve of a battle.

The ancient Greeks even a practice of taking in a young (and handsome) man and mentoring him. Of course there'd also be a bit of sex with them, too.

How can Loghain not be slash material? We all know what he and Maric were up to on cold nights in the Kokari wilds...

My theory is that they weren't up to anything, because Maric was completely oblivious. That's why Loghain's so damn grumpy.

I can see pretty much anybody as slash material; I start from the assumption that unless specifically noted otherwise, a character's sexuality isn't fixed. And if the source does specify, and I can figure out a way for it to make sense (Alistair defaults to straight, but he'd totally fall for the right guy) then I'll slash them, too.

I could easily see Varel/Nathaniel, but it would almost certainly go to the Daddy/boy place.

Well, due to the relationship the writers have established between him and Nathaniel, it's just wrong on so many levels.

This I would agree with. I'm totally cool with either Varel or Nathaniel being slashed, but...not with each other. That's kind of creepy incestuous. (I'd see Loghain/Cailan as equally wrong, for the same reason.)

Oh god, I can so see Loghain desperately fighting a Cailan fixation. The golden-haired mix of Maric and Rowan's features? Deffo.

I can, too. But this doesn't mean that I wouldn't find the two of them hooking up to be *seriously* creepy.

Oh, I have nothing against Varel/Nathaniel, it's just that for this particular fic I'm pimping, it's wrong. :) And if you can make it work, all the more power to you!
