The DA2 Demo Discussion Thread (Spoilers Inside)

Okay guys, thoughts?

1. Shale would be happy that Thedas is just as brown as ever. Possibly even more so.
2.The new skill tree setup makes me kind of @_@.
3.The dialogue will take some getting used to, but I like that you can directly ask companions for opinions! That's pretty neat!
4. Aveline seems to have stolen most of Wesley's jaw.
5. With a name like "Carver," he was bound to die. Seriously, mother? Seriously?
6. I love how immersive the new UI is.
7. Isabela has a GORGEOUS ass. Oh my Maker.
8. Screw you, demo, for not running on high-end computers. I spent an hour getting it not to crash. :P
9. The motion capture is amazing. I can ALMOST forgive them for dropping female qunari.
10. ROGUES ARE BAMF.

Now if only I could get FRAPS to work, the comm would be flooded with banners and icons. Sodding hell
MUAHHAAHAHAHA. GOT IT FIXED. Sooo many screenshots. :3

Also, did anyone else have a problem where you simply could NOT get to the leveling screen for Carver or Bethany? Sometimes it would randomly spit me back to the other UI, but when Aveline or Hawke leveled they'd pop up after and demanded to be leveled next.

Whut.

INFO COMING IN FROM AROUND THE COMM:

Can't get it to download quickly?
Try this mirror. Members report >1hr download time as opposed to the two sodding days some of us have been stuck with. (Make sure you run a virus scan, darlings.  And if anyone has a torrent magnet link, lemme know and I'll add it here too.)

Having install problems?
If you're getting the .dll error and the game won't load, check out this thread and update your DirectX install. Yes, even if it says it's current.

Game randomly crashing?
Don't run it using DirectX 11. Word on the street is the demo doesn't actually support it, so high-end rigs are having tons of problems. Dropping to DirectX 9 in video settings fixed this for me.

Having issues killing the second ogre as a rogue? Check out this thread.

Want the opinion of comm members who were less than impressed?
darkrose and sinick have some rather lucid explanations for their overwhelming sense of meh.

Want screenshots for icons/banners/Varric's hand gestures/Isabela's ass? Check out the DA2 demo section of the peopleofthedas album. Any of the images there are free for your use, darlings. Just be warned, there are 641 of them. That's after culling. Varric, Cassandra, Flemeth, Bethany, Carver, Aveline, Wesley, Isabela, and some random dead grunts and hurlocks all featured. m!Hawke tank is featured. Might add f!Hawke later.

Concerned about cup size? Blame Varric, not BioWare, and check this out. Oh, I am giggling madly!

Want to unlock the inventory and character creator on the demo? There's a mod for that.

Worried there won't be mods for DA2? Don't be.

Also, some console commands work on the demo. Check it out.

I don't like it.

Combat sucks. I'm a control freak, and I like being able to pause and then tell everyone where to go. This moves so fast that all I can do is click icons and hope I didn't just choose "kill entire party". The rogue backstab thing literally makes me dizzy. I don't like that I can't pull back as far as I did in DAO so that I can see most of the battlefield, and the transparent mini-map makes it hard to see red dots against a reddish-brown background. Targeting is much more difficult than in Origins, at least for me. Also, why can't I use Tab to select enemies?

And WTF is with the recharge time on Heal? Makes the spell largely useless. I hope there's going to be a way to swap weapons, because going back to click on a corpse? Not on.

I don't like the female movement animation. They all look like they're going to tilt over, maybe because of their MASSIVE RACKS. I mean, I like boobies as much as the next bisexual girl, but these women are going to throw out their backs. And the new, improved graphics? The people all look like Sims 3 characters, with their pudding faces. The darkspawn, IMO, were creepier in Origins; I won't say I "liked" the rotting-flesh look, but the way I went "Ew!" at the hurlocks made them feel appropriately monstrous in a way the redesigned ones don't.

I HATE the fully-voiced character. HATE. Female!Hawke has a perfectly nice, bland, voice, but it's not the voice I would ever choose for a character of mine. I also hate the dialogue wheel. I LOATHE the dialogue wheel. "Perhaps we'll get lucky and they'll run out of darkspawn" != "Neither can they" I hate having the words my character is saying be something other than what I chose. And "He won't be alone" definitely isn't what I'd have chosen if I'd known she'd say, "At least Father will have company." WTF?

As far as Carver dying? Meh. There's not enough there for me to care, honestly. I cared a hell of a lot more about Shianni and my Cousland parents than about this guy who had like, two lines. I really didn't care about Aveline's husband dying, because he was a complete dick. The only character I really cared about was Flemeth, and that was mostly because I was trying to figure out why she was doing the crazy old lady thing with my Wardens instead of looking rather hot.

It's possible that when I can customize the look, it'll feel more like "my" character, but right now, it's like playing Leliana's Song, where I felt like I was playing out someone else's story and my choices didn't matter, because the whole thing was running on rails to a specific destination. If I want that, I'll dig up FFVIII and re-install it--which makes sense, since the combat reminded me of a console game.

Things I did like: the opening. I really liked Varric, actually, and I can see why people were hoping he'd be an LI. And I kind of liked what we saw of Cassandra, although it was jarring when we got to the trailer and her hair changed color. The whole "This is what happened--no, this is what really happened was an interesting setup.

The skill tree is kind of cool, although I had a hard time actually getting things to select, and there doesn't seem to be a way to change your mind, though that could be the demo.

I will try to play it through once--assuming the combat doesn't prove to be a migraine trigger--in hopes that there's a good story underneath all of the action-oriented mechanics. For now, though, I'm going back to my Brosca.

Oh dear. I can't get it to run - so I can't see for myself, but if it is the way you say - ew, that's bad. I only heard f!Hawke's voice in a video, and I thought that she sounds like a commercial - too smooth, no character.
And the boob-thing. I hate the boob-thing too. Why the hell can't women in games have normal breasts? Or at least have the body to match - I can very well imagine a mage to be chubby - they don't seem to get much excercise in that tower... they give us the possibility to change the length of our character's nose, but when it comes to the body we're stuck with f***ing Barbie.
Hm... I've never played a debiliator before... I think I'll return to Origins and roll up another mage *snorts*

My absolute favorite boobthing is Merrill :dripping sarcasm:. Her tits are almost as big as FHawkes, and she's got a 12yr old's body. It would be like if someone slapped some oversized bra on my husband, loaded it up with water balloons and told him to jump around. And I haven't even played the demo, that's just from browsin' some of the pickies recently uploaded.

Pausing wasn't the problem--it's that when I unpause, the animation is so fast my eyes can't track it properly. The rogue backstab almost made me throw up, because of the fast spin-around. There's a reason I don't play FPS games; they make me motion-sick, and unfortunately, this is likely to do the same.

I don't think their racks are THAT massive, but I'm probably biased because I'm 5'4", weigh 145 and am a 34FF.

My sister-in-law is closer to your size, and she had a reduction covered by insurance because of her back problems. No, they're not hentai-huge, but it's enough to be noticeable as a change.

I know I'm not EA's target demographic: I'm too old, too female, and too black. But even so, I'm sad that a company that built its rep on PC RPG's is moving toward a more action-combat focused style, especially when I'm not sure I can physically play the game.

Wow... this. So much. I want to like it but I'm feeling like all the things I loved have been stripped out. I hate the character saying something different than what it says. I HATE the recharge time on potions (how does that make any sense??)

Dragon Age =/= Mass Effect. I mean I like Mass Effect but... arg.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who hated the jiggle/spin backstab thing rogues do - seriously, WTF? I'm hoping this is confined to the demo and won't be in the actual game.

I agree with you on the character voice - but at least it's not Isolde's/Marjolaine's/Erlina's voice, LOL.

If they'd gotten Marjolaine's voice actress, I would have to cancel my preorder, no lie.

Have you tried playing as a different class than rogue? I ask because I played through as a mage first and didn't have any problems with motion sickness probably because I was observing from a ranged position, but then switched to the more close up rogue fighting and I started to feel queasy myself.

(This is why I can't do first person shooters or play anything that doesn't let me back off from my character's pov a bit. I get so damned motionsick. Ugh.)

I tried archer last night, and they have a great tactical position to lob bombs and suchlike without being in the thick of it.

I'm going to have to try one out, especially since it sounds like they don't actually suck to play this time around.
