When I came back from my study abroad in London I didn't know anybody (except it appears Shimmy) who'd ever heard of trifle, let alone eaten it.
I fell in love with it there. I was able to make a big raspberry one for the rest of our study abroad group for St. George's Day and then last New Year's Eve I made one for the guests, none of whom had ever had it either.
I'm not sure about the rest of the country, but it seems like you'd be hard-pressed to find many people who know what trifle is in the Pacific Northwest or in Hawaii (where I grew up).
