Chapter Eight: Invisible
*~*~*~*~*

"A man without tattoos is invisible to the Gods." – Iban Proverb

They camp on the edge of the Dalish camp after breaking the werewolf curse. The Warden stays with the elves to heal those already afflicted curse, bringing them back to health. The Keeper comments that it is as if she were able to separate the poison from the body, drawing it out. Sten watches the Warden being led from cot to cot to touch and to heal. Late into the night she brings the elves back from the brink of death. The Dog remains by her side while the Assassin talks with the Dalish, learning all he can about his mother's people.

Before dawn the Assassin guides her back to their camp, handing her over to Sten. He helps her drink some broth then covers her with a blanket when she sighs already asleep. There are no dreams that night and after closely examining the emblem of her ‘rank’, he eventually closes his eyes. The Dog lies down at his back with a huff. The Warden snuggles into his warmth as the fire dies down. When the sun rises the Bard covers her mouth to silence her laughter at Sten's predicament – he is trapped between the Dog and the Warden, her head on his arm, her face pressed into his chest – unable to move without waking her.

Later that morning, as they perform maintenance on arms and armor, bathe and do laundry, the Warden returns to the Dalish. The new Keeper, honoring her request, applies additional vallaslin to the Warden's body. After reminding her not to heal the wounds, the Keeper, who enlists the assistance of the other artisans, began to draw an intricate design of green leafy vines wrapping around the Warden's arms, around her back, belly and chest, and about her legs. The long painful process takes all day and long into the night to complete.

She is stronger after breaking the curse and enduring the application of blood ink. Instead of following the Weakling down the road to Orzammar, she turns toward Denerim; Sten and the Dog follow without hesitation. The rest of them stop and look at one another. The Dog barks and the Bard whistles to the Weakling. He retraces his steps and they all follow the Warden who did not pause.

"This path does not lead to potential allies," Sten states.

She knocks on his Juggernaut chest plate.

"The others are in need of repair," he agrees.

They arrive in Denerim without incident and she heads straight to Master Wade's shop. Except for Sten and the Warden, they all leave their armor with Wade to repair, putting on alternative sets they picked up at the fort at Soldier's Peak. The Weakling and the Bard both take them on detours, fulfilling the Warden's promises to them. The Weakling is crushed as his sister yells at him for killing their mother and they help the Bard confront and kill her mentor. Both lost deep in their thoughts, the Warden touches them, bringing them back with her unending reassurances and affection.

After running errands, lunch at the tavern, and a bit of shopping, they return to Master Wade. The Assassin and the Bard dress in their repaired drake scale leathers assisting each other with the laces. The Weakling's red and white armor has also been repaired, and the Bard and Assassin assist the Weakling with the heavy chest pieces when they are dressed. Sten leans against a wall, taking it all in impassively.

With tears in his eyes, Wade presents the Warden with her new dragonskin armor. While gushing about the unique abilities of the armor, Wade dresses her himself insuring that each custom piece fits comfortably and that the lacings and straps rest perfectly. The armor, Dalish in its styling, has a corset over the usual bare midriff.

Unexpected. The Warden now wishes to become a warrior?

The green vines on her skin appear to climb up out the armor and curl around her neck. Between the boots and the armored skirt, the vines coil around her thighs, green leaves behind each knee; these are covered when she pulls on the dragonskin breeches. The Bard admires the tumble of leaves on the Warden's upper arms and follows the vines flowing around her arms ending at her wrists in delicate tendrils. The Assassin grins approvingly, noting that when the healing process is complete, the color will be very striking.

Vallaslin (vahl-ahs-LEEN): Blood writing. The art of tattooing adopted by some elves to more prominently (and some might say belligerently) display their worship of the traditional elven pantheon.
