I am posting a bit early as I will be entertained with an office move this entire weekend and then taking next week trying to restore office life back to normal. I'll try to pop in mid-week before falling into bed exhausted. Have fun with family this long weekend (Memorial Day) and don't forget the sunscreen!

Chapter Three: Nightmare
*~*~*~*~*

"Oh, I can think of many other things we can do other than sleep." – Zevran Arainai

A voice in the darkness – He remembers the first time he heard it.

A woman's scream makes his hair stand on end. His sword leaping to his hand, he searches the camp for the intruder. Cautiously edging between the tents, he attempts to keep from being highlighted by the fire. He sees the Warden thrash in her bedroll screaming again.

The Weakling comes to the fire, rubbing sleep from his eyes, "It's alright, Sten. She's having a nightmare. I'll take watch." He shakes his head at the Bard who draws near to the Warden. "Let her wake on her own."

As Sten sheathes the sword, the Warden begins to shout in elvish, her words hurried and frantic. He is familiar with only some of the words. Her voice is ragged as if she has not spoken in some time, a year or two, he estimates.

The Bard looks at the Warden listening closely. "She can speak. I didn't know that she could talk! She is dreaming of a great dragon and urging everyone to run to seek safety. There is blood and she is alone and frightened. Oh, I hope she will wake up soon."

"Get back," growls the Weakling, "If you hover over her, you will startle her when she does wake up." The Bard withdraws to her blankets.

Sten returns to his pacing circle. Finally the Warden sits up, tears streaming down her face. He hears the Weakling tell the Warden that the dragon she saw is the Archdemon and that dreams are worse for Wardens who are joined during a Blight. Sten learns of the Warden's shortened life, how they seek their death in the Deep Roads, and the other secrets the Weakling shares with her. She nods as if she has heard all this before, but her eyes flash afraid.

Night after night, Sten sees and hears the nightmares which both of the Wardens suffer. The Weakling seems to be able shrug them off and return to sleep easily. The Warden is tormented by them. In her sleep, every night sometimes twice or more she screams or babbles in elvish. The Bard translates the Warden's words and Sten listens with care learning the language. Each night the Warden dreams of a great dragon that calls her to follow. The darkspawn gather at its feet listening to the sweet music of its voice. It comes to kill them, to eat them, and to take them into the darkness, she warns.

One evening he confronts her, asking what she intends to do about the Blight. The Warden's pulls a dagger from her boot and bares her teeth. She attempts to stare him down holding a knife. He snorts, trying to convince her that he is unimpressed. He watches and sees the moment she accepts her fears and begins to plan.

The Warden's dreams occurred less frequently and at predictable times. Although the dreams continue, she no longer screams into the darkness. Making arrangements to take the watch in which her dreams come upon her, Sten alone watches and listens carefully. He learns of the Blight, the Archdemon, the Grey Wardens, and later of things which no one else knows or speaks.
