I doubt it was quite that self-serving; it's more likely to be to protect Warden secrets.

But certainly, on my first playthrough, I was not surprised in the slightest when Jory baulked. He'd already failed one morale check in the Wilds, it seemed inevitable to me that he would also fail this one.
