DA:2 Romance whinge

So, I'm playing the game, and I'm really digging it. I love the new combat system (though my rogue!Hawke could stand to turn fewer somersaults, and also, why such a long cooldown on healing potions omg?!), I'm enjoying the side quests, I like that it has less a sense of overall urgency than DAO, and while I do have some complaints, they're relatively few.

But there's this one thing that's going to break my heart.



The only companion I've met so far that I want to romance is Varric!

Aveline is terrific, but I can't really see a Rogue/Captain Of The Guard romance. She's just a good friend.

Fenris is so emo, and also hates mages, which, MY SISTER, YOU ASSHOLE. So just NO. He's lucky I can't try to kill him.

Anders is also emotastic, and he's not half so adorable and charming in this one. I mean, he's nice enough, I guess, and go him for helping people in his clinic, but he doesn't set the romance bytes aflutter.

Isabella is smokin' hot, but again, she just doesn't interest me that much. Though good on her for freeing the slaves.

And Merril is cute as kittens, but...well, she's cute as kittens. Kittens also do not make the pixelated pulse race.

But VARRIC! OMG! He's funny, smart, savvy, badass with that crossbow, and altogether awesome! SO WHY NO ROMANCE OPTION??!!!? *cries and cries*

I'm sort of hoping that the Exiled Prince will provide a possible romance option that's more compelling than Varric, but honestly, I doubt it can. Because VARRIC!

I am a deeply bitter and sad panda about this. I'm hoping for a direct sequel to the game. Partially because Hawke's story doesn't seem finished, and partially because I'm hoping they do what they did in Mass Effect with Garrus and give make him a love interest in the next game.

I'm guessing it's because it would have added too much complexity to his narration if he could be your lover.

Also would have made a hash of the final cutscenes, which I won't speak further on if you are still on your first run.

Probably for the best, on a discussion begun by someone who hasn't finished her first run yet. Or, you could have whited the comment out, so peeps can choose to read it or not.

If you want to start a Vael discussion though, go for it! Start your own thread m'dear and shove the whole thing under a cut.

Egads. When will BioWare finally come up with a smokin hot, mature, complicated yet lovable LI? They got it right once with Valen Shadowbreath (How old is NWN:HotU? Look at how much fanfic he still generates) - why can't they do that again???

Varric would definitely be a step into the right direction, but, Dwarf. *shudders* Sorry, a no go for me. But I agree, personality wise he is way more interesting and engaging than the four teenies of love.

I have to say, though, that trying to pull off a Fenris friendmance as a mage is pretty...challenging.

Fenris keeps making me want to punch him, with his anti-mage comments. I'm all, "DUDE, my sister is RIGHT HERE."

There's one moment when Fenris says something anti-mage, and my Hawke looked like he was going to cry. It was very sad.

*laughs* He kind of is. My backstory is that his father was even more concerned for him than for Bethany, because he's got such a strong affinity for Primal and Elemental magic, and so it was drummed into him that he had to keep hold of his temper so he didn't burn down a city.

Also, he REALLY wants in Fenris' pants in the worst way.

I am madly, passionately in love with Varric and I was super cranky about not getting to romance him, but after playing through the game.... I kind of ship him with Merrill. O_o

I can see that. He's one of the few people who are actively sweet and kind and concerned about her.

I still want on him so bad though. ;_;
